Day 32.4

Hi there,

Firstly, I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. As awkward as that might sound, I've been thinking of doing so for a couple days now but didn't find the time... Since I'm back at school, I've spent a quite some time working and the rest of it wandering on the Internet.

Anyways, as I said in my previous post, the schedule during vacation is difficult to support. The biggest problem is finding things to do, and even then you must find the motivation to do them.

Another problem I encountered during vacation is that I organized two parties in a row (the 31st and the 1st). In addition, the day before a good friend arrived and, as most people, she isn't on Everyman. Long story short, from the 30th to the 1st, I didn't have time to take naps. To compensate, I woke up at around 10a.m. (after going to bed at around 4:30) the 1st and the 2nd.

Needless to say, I was tired after that three-day episode! So the two next days I tried to have a full night sleep to recuperate, and that not possible. Anyways, I continued Everyman and decided to do a quick "reboot" from Saturday to Sunday: I slept (or tried to at least) from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. I felt better afterwards and since then, it's been much easier to stay on Everyman.

To recap, I'm still on everyman as before (the only difference is that I'm doing a full 4 hour core sleep) and I'm perfectly healthy (actually maybe even more then before) and feel very awake.

Time to sleep, see you around!

My wife and I are having trouble keeping to the schedule, mainly it's built wrong and we need a real alarm clock. We're really looking forward to seeing your future posts.

  5. We are from france too!
Sorry to disappoint you but we stopped last February. We tried the experience for a bit more than 2 month. Looking at it with more detachment, I don't think it's really possible to keep on this kind of schedule at the long term but it can come handy to master it for some special occasion. Also I don't regret this experience because of what I learnt about how my sleep and my dreams are working, it was really interesting.
Good luck with your's experience! Which schedule did you choose? and will you keep a blog like our about it?

  6. Hey,
I'm going on my third week on Everyman and I'm still finding it hard to adjust. I'm a college student and triathlete in California so, obviously, Everyman was appealing. Previously, I found it difficult to find the time for training, homework, friends, a boyfriend, and of course relaxation and hobbies.
While, I love all the extra time I have in my day, I can't seem to conquer the fatigue for longer than three days at a time.
I've kind of given up on my schedule for Friday and Saturday nights.
As a college student I'm prone to drinking and smoking, both of which negatively affect my sleep. When I tried to stick to Everyman... well, let's just say I didn't get the best results.
Anyway, I want to continue trying. I'm getting better at sticking to my nap schedule, but I'm the kind of person that when I have something to do, I want to get it done and not leave it up in the air, even if only for the 20 min is takes to recharge. Mostly, it's the having to go home aspect.
I live ridiculously close to my campus. Nevertheless, the process of getting home, napping, and restarting takes at least 40 min -usually closer to an hour if I make time for coffee (which I usually can't live without)
That brings me to another point: I've been running on at least three cups a day, typically closer to four or five. Is that ok? While I love the affects of coffee on my brain, I also just LOVE coffee and would drink it regardless of my sleeping habits.
Anyway, all things considered, I think I'm oversleeping the same, if not less so, this year (on the Everyman) than I was last year on monophasic sleep.
My questions are... Will I actually adjust? Can I maintain a five day Everyman schedule pared with two days of normal sleep? I mean, if everyman is equivalent to eight hours on monophasic, they should be interchangeable, right?
Give me your input. I feel a lot better seeing how many people are trying it! It's especially cool to see everyone's backgrounds.
I really want to make this work. I love the extra time and I hate being reliant on so much sleep (aka wasted time in bed). I'd rather be spending my time in bed in other ways. ;-)

  7. Hi there!
First off, thank you for your interesting comment.
Secondly, the Everyman sleep schedule requires a lot of discipline, especially at the beginning. In order for your body to adapt, I suggest you to really stick to the schedule (even on the weekends) very precisely for at least the first two weeks. The first week (and the first three to four days in particular) is tiring but essential to your adaptation to the schedule. And the second week is like a "confirmation" to your body that you want to sleep the everyman way.
After those two first weeks, you can start playing a bit with your sleep schedule and start delaying naps by up to an hour: by doing so, you'll most probably be tired after you wake up but you'll feel completely refreshed right after the next nap!

  8. Are you guys still on everyman? It seems like you quit. I've just started, literally just got up from my first core sleep. I am dog tired, I absolutely love sleep, I sleep on average 9-10 hours a night normally (sometimes 12). For about 6 years now I've held the opinion that sleep is extremely good for you and the more you get the better. I believe that getting 10 or 12 hours really makes a difference to my state of being, I find myself extremely calm and able to concentrate, before that I pretty much slept 7/6 hours average and always had a feeling of feeling tired. I coped just fine on 7/6 but I never felt really great either. I have the feeling that everyman will be the same for me.... So very very tempted to go back to bed. I don't want to be a disappointment, but I'm almost certain I will.

  9. Hi Chris (and Eric),

I think the everyman sleep schedule sounds brilliant. I was wondering if you guys do a lot of sports and if so, how that effects your schedule.

Personally I'm running 5 times a week (30 - 60min) and I play squash 2 times a week. Do you think it's possible to restore enough when sleeping like 4 - 5 hours a night? In other words: how does the Everyman program effects your energy levels?

  10. Hi,

I had two 1.5 hour Krav Maga classes per week (close combat sport). Eric had two two hour classes of Kung Fu.

So, moderately-high sport activity is definitely doable. I think it can be a very interesting experience to try if you can sustain your sport level activity with the sleep schedule. Note that you do need some time to get your body accustomed, so do both the schedule and sport for at least three to four weeks before reaching a conclusion.

  11. Thanks for your quick response! Yesterday I read the whole day about different sleep schedules and although I really like the idea, I think I'll postpone the everyman schedule to a different phase in my life. On my monophasic schedule I already FEEL sports are going less easy when I slept little. I'll play it safe and will use (enough!) sleep as a recovery from the sports.

    1. I think it could be a really interesting self-experiment which would be beneficial to the global mind of the internet if you tracked it on a blog. ;-)
